I tidied everything away and put everything back in place on the car and came in home for a warming cup of tea. This I thought is not a problem, and at least should keep things running until I can replace both fuel sender units. To keep the car in use temporarily, I would need to keep the fuel level on the fuel gauge above half full. So, the fuel is still only being drawn from the driver side of the tank. The passenger side of the tank still has the same level of fuel, but the driver side, had a lot less fuel than the 1 gallon I had put in. I then went and removed both sender units again to have a look at the fuel level. I let it idle for almost 1 hour then switched off the ignition. This afternoon I filled a container with 1 gallon of diesel, poured it into the tank, refitted all fuel lines and both sender units and tried starting the car.Īfter a minute or so, the engine was alive and idling nicely. I contacted a friend who works in the motor trade, explained the problem to him, and asked him if he could source me 2 new fuel sender/delivery units with all required internal pipes and connections. Now, working on the car at home and spending much time investigating further, I can still not find any reason for the problem. So, after some time inspecting both units, and all connections, I could see no damage or indication of why fuel was only been drawn from 1 half of the tank.Īt this point, I arranged to have the car towed home. ![]() This unit is connected to the first unit internally by the 2 pipes coming from the first unit. I undid the securing ring/nut of this unit also and raised it up out of its hole. I then moved to the driver side of the car, and removed a second cover above the fuel tank, which revealed an identical area on this side of the tank with another unit installed. I could see no logical reason for the unit failing to supply fuel from the tank which contained fuel. Not 1 drop of fuel could be coaxed out of the thing. There was no way for me to completely disconnect the fuel sender unit from the tank, as it has 2 pipes running horizontal to the driver side of the tank, so what I did was connect a spare piece of hose to the fuel outlet connection on the sender unit, and fitted with a hand operated primer pump, I attempted to draw fuel through the sender unit. ![]() With the unit lifted clear of the opening in the top of the tank, I could clearly see the diesel level, almost up to the opening of the tank which is about 5 inches, so I was baffled as to why I could not get fuel to come out of the tank. I then removed the securing ring/nut, from the fuel sender/delivery unit, and lifted out that unit. I had tools with me, so I removed the rear seat, and the cover screwed to the rear section covering the fuel pipes and cables to the tank on the passenger side of the car. Having had a fuel line problem about 1 month ago, which turned out to be a split fuel hose at the fuel filter, the first thing I checked when I got to the car was the fuel system.Īlthough the fuel gauge indicated almost half a tank, there was no fuel getting to the fuel filter.įurther investigation revealed that no fuel could be drawn up the fuel line from the tank, just like it had run out of fuel, but knowing how much fuel had been put in the tank just 1 day before and the little amount of miles covered, I would not accept it had run out of fuel. ![]() ![]() The wife's car is a 2001 C220 CDI Elegance auto.Ī few days ago, when leaving her place of work, she started the car, and drove about 1 mile when the car cut out and refused to start again.
